Underground Bathhouse & Spa Atera to open in Glasgow

Atera, a new underground bathhouse and spa concept, is set to open in Glasgow city centre this September. Located beneath Oswald Street, close to Glasgow Central Station, Atera has been designed as a subterranean wellness destination bringing together thermal bathing, expert treatments, fitness, movement and recovery under one roof.

The concept is being launched by international spa and wellness consultancy bbspa_Group and marks the company’s first major commercial opening in the UK market. The group is currently overseeing more than 80 projects worldwide, including 30 across the UK.

Atera will centre on Mediterranean wellness traditions and ancient bathing rituals, with a focus on water, heat, movement and restoration. The name draws on the relationship between land and water, reflecting the concept’s connection to elemental wellbeing and ritual-led recovery.

The Glasgow site will include thermal zones, treatment areas, a fully equipped gym, dedicated movement studios and a wellness-focused café built around Mediterranean nutritional principles. The operational model has been developed around long-term health, recovery and performance. Membership tiers are expected to combine advanced diagnostic testing with tailored movement and recovery strategies, creating personalised wellbeing roadmaps for clients. The concept has been designed for guests who want regular access to recovery-led wellness, combining the social and restorative traditions of the bathhouse with modern fitness, diagnostics and treatment planning.

Kirsty MacCormick, SVP of global operations at bbspa_Group, comments, “Atera has been designed as more than a spa. It's a contemporary Mediterranean-inspired bathhouse where thermal rituals, movement, treatments and wellbeing come together to create a truly unique destination in Scotland.”

For Glasgow, the opening represents a significant addition to the city’s growing wellness and spa market. The underground location, thermal bathing concept and performance-led membership model place Atera within the wider rise of urban bathhouses and recovery clubs across the UK and Europe.

Further details on Atera’s specific thermal facilities, treatment protocols and membership pricing will be released ahead of the official September launch.
