British beauty entrepreneur Jemma Kidd has launched Photo51, a new longevity and wellness platform combining genetic and epigenetic testing to provide personalised insights into biological ageing and how lifestyle factors influence long-term health. The UK launch marks a new venture for Kidd, who previously founded her eponymous cosmetics brand, as she enters the rapidly expanding longevity sector with a service designed to make advanced biological testing more accessible to consumers.
Photo51 brings together two forms of testing to examine both inherited genetic characteristics and how the body is ageing in response to environmental and lifestyle influences. The platform then translates these results into personalised recommendations covering nutrition, supplementation, exercise, sleep and recovery.
The service is built around two complementary tests. Gene Roadmap analyses an individual's genetic blueprint to identify inherited characteristics influencing areas such as cellular repair, nutrient metabolism, mood regulation and stress response. Meanwhile, BioAge uses DNA methylation analysis to estimate biological age, including the pace of ageing across individual organs and physiological systems.
Unlike services that focus on a single biological age score, Photo51 is designed to provide a more detailed picture of how different parts of the body may be ageing, alongside guidance on which lifestyle factors could benefit from greater attention. The concept was inspired by Kidd's own experiences with unexplained fatigue, despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After years of searching for answers, specialist testing provided insights that prompted her to reconsider how she approached her health.
“I tried everything and nothing seemed to make a difference. I did not feel connected to my body; we were speaking two different languages,” says Kidd. “It took the right doctor, the right timing and a great deal of money to uncover something that changed how I understood my health. I decided that this depth of insight should be within reach of anyone who wants it.”
The platform's scientific approach is overseen by Dr Jean-Marc Sobczyk, Chair of its Scientific Advisory Board, who brings 25 years of experience spanning methylation biology, clinical genomics, functional medicine and longevity science. Photo51's epigenetic testing incorporates biological ageing models developed through academic research, including work associated with Harvard, Yale and Duke universities. The testing also includes assessments of telomere length, stress response and organ-specific ageing.
Named after Photograph 51, the X-ray diffraction image associated with Rosalind Franklin's groundbreaking contribution to the discovery of DNA's double-helix structure, the platform draws inspiration from the scientific foundations of modern genetics. Photo51 is positioned as an ongoing service, with repeat epigenetic testing allowing users to monitor changes over time and reassess their lifestyle recommendations.
The platform is now available in the UK, with Gene Roadmap priced at £350 and BioAge at £550. Both tests can be completed at home using a cheek swab or finger-prick sample respectively, with personalised results delivered through the Photo51 app.
