The Return of Thin Brows: Who They Suit and How to Make Them Work
Our Columnist, Nez Hasan is a renowned semi-permanent makeup artist who has nearly 10 years' experience in the beauty industry. She has a passion for enhancing natural beauty and offers a range of treatments to an international client base.
When I started my career in Microblading 2016, full, fluffy brows were the go-to trend and they have dominated the beauty scene ever since. However, as with all things in fashion, trends are cyclical. Recently, the ultra-chic thin brow has been making a subtle yet powerful comeback. At first, the idea of thin brows was met with disbelief. Comments like “I’d never go back to thin brows!” were common. For those who will not go back to thin brows due to past over-plucking, it is a definite no.
However, there has been a shift over the last few years; instead of following trend, women are leaning toward what feels natural and suits them, especially when it comes to their brow size. Shape and size of brows are becoming more personal – with thin brows re-entering the conversation in a new and modern way.
From runway models to red carpet icons, we are seeing a refined, ‘90s-inspired brow being reimagined for the modern ages. But is this look for everyone?
Who Do Thin Brows Suit?
Thin brows can beautifully flatter angular or heart-shaped faces, drawing more attention to the eyes and cheekbones. They can add elegance and definition to softer features and can help balance out a more dramatic makeup look. But it’s not just about face shape—confidence plays a big part too. Thin brows are a statement, and they suit anyone who is willing to own that look.
How to Embrace the Trend Gracefully
Going thin doesn't mean returning to over-plucking brow. Instead, it is about refinement. A skilled brow artist can help reshape your brows to you give you a natural shape with precision. It is about refinement, not removal, and also having a great brow maintenance routine to support your brows with proper care. Using nourishing oils helps keep brows strong and healthy, making it easier to shape them without causing damage.
Making Thin Brows Better
To enhance thin brows, fill them in lightly with a pencil or powder, focusing on clean, crisp lines. Add a subtle highlight beneath the arch to lift the brow, and finish with a clear or tinted gel for hold. For those with naturally sparse brows, techniques like Powder Brows or Brow Lamination offer structure and fullness without daily effort. These treatments can create a soft, natural makeup look that lasts.
Is the Thin Brow Trend Officially Back?
While the thick brow are not going anywhere anytime soon – and we still love them – there is a growing acceptance that not everyone needs to have big bold brows to feel beautiful. More of my clients are now requesting a sleeker, more natural shape that works with their features. It’s not about going pencil-thin—it’s about easy maintenance and timeless elegance. I’ve been creating more “soft thin” brows than ever before: brows that are stylish, yet wearable. For clients who do have thin brows, I often recommend Powder Brows for a soft makeup effects, paired with my signature brow care range to promote healthy, fuller-looking brows.
Whether you're naturally blessed with slim brows or thinking of refining your current shape, thin brows can absolutely be beautiful, bold, and flattering. It’s all about how you wear them—and how they're crafted. Whatever your brow shape or size, small tweaks and the right treatments can enhance them so you can feel confident and polished all day long.
