Re-thinking How We Prepare Skin for Air Travel with a 72-hour window Mindset

Air travel can affect the skin long before take-off, with disrupted sleep, stress, dehydration and changes in routine all placing pressure on the skin barrier. Emma Wedgwood, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Independent Prescriber and Clinical Director of Emma Wedgwood Aesthetics, sits down with PBL Magazine to share her views on the issue and explain her ‘72-hour flight window’ approach to preparing the skin before a journey and supporting its recovery after landing.

Ask someone what flying does to their skin and they'll probably tell you the cabin air dries it out. They're right, but only partly. By the time someone boards a plane, their skin has often already been responding to hours or even days of physiological stress. Early starts, disrupted sleep, rushing through airports, dehydration, elevated cortisol levels and changes to routine all begin affecting skin biology before the aircraft has even left the ground.

This is why I developed the ‘72-hour flight window’ a clinical approach focused on preparing the skin before travel and supporting recovery afterwards. Rather than treating flying as a single event, the aim is to help the skin become more resilient before exposure to environmental stress and support its natural repair processes once the journey is complete.

Beyond Cabin Air

Low cabin humidity is often blamed for post-flight skin concerns, and with good reason. Aircraft cabins typically operate at humidity levels of around 10–20%, compared with approximately 40–50% in buildings. This drier environment can contribute to moisture loss from the skin’s surface, often leaving it feeling tight, dry and uncomfortable after a flight.¹ However, the effects of flying go beyond cabin air alone.

Travel places the skin under pressure from multiple directions. Long journeys often involve reduced sleep, irregular meals, increased caffeine or alcohol intake, lower water consumption, prolonged sitting and elevated stress levels. Individually, these factors may seem minor, but together they can create a challenging environment for the skin barrier.

Research has shown that psychological stress can affect epidermal barrier function, contributing to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and reduced hydration.² When combined with environmental changes and disrupted routines, it is understandable why many people feel their skin looks different after travelling. The skin has not suddenly changed overnight. It is responding to a combination of physiological stressors.

Recovery Matters

One of the biggest mistakes I see is that people focus on correcting their skin too quickly after a flight.

Many travellers immediately reach for stronger exfoliating acids, retinoids or intensive active ingredients because their complexion looks tired or dull. While understandable, this approach does not always support the skin’s needs at that moment. When the skin barrier has been challenged, restoration should come before correction.

Healthy barrier function is fundamental to healthy skin. It regulates moisture, protects against environmental aggressors and supports normal repair processes. If we immediately overwhelm already stressed skin with aggressive treatments or active ingredients, we risk prolonging irritation rather than improving it.

Instead, I encourage patients to think about recovery in much the same way they would after exercise. We understand the importance of allowing muscles to recover after physical exertion, yet we rarely extend the same thinking to the body's largest organ. Supporting hydration, calming inflammation and allowing the skin barrier to recover should always be the priority.

The 72-Hour Window

The more patients I saw returning from business trips and holidays, the more obvious one pattern became: many were trying to fix the aftermath of travel rather than preparing their skin beforehand.

That's why my 72-hour flight window focuses on both preparation and recovery.

Before travelling, the aim is to strengthen the skin barrier and optimise skin health, so it is better equipped to cope with the environmental challenges ahead. That may be as simple as adjusting a patient's skincare routine, improving hydration and avoiding unnecessary irritation immediately before flying.

For some patients, particularly those who travel frequently, regenerative treatments may also play a role. Treatments such as polynucleotides, skin boosters or other collagen-supporting therapies can help improve skin quality and resilience over time, but they are never a substitute for healthy skin function. Every treatment plan should be tailored to the individual rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

After travelling, the focus shifts towards recovery. Rather than trying to immediately reverse tired-looking skin, the aim is to support the skin’s natural repair processes and restore balance. Depending on the patient, regenerative treatments, advanced laser technologies or other medical aesthetic approaches may be considered to support hydration, collagen production and overall skin quality.

The Frequent Flyer Effect

Frequent flyers have fundamentally shaped the way I think about travel-related skin health.

Increasingly, I see professionals whose work involves regular international travel. They often tell me that their skin never quite feels as though it has recovered before they're preparing for another journey.

I don't believe flying alone causes premature ageing. But skin rarely experiences stress in isolation. Repeated travel is often accompanied by disrupted sleep, increased stress, inconsistent routines, climate changes, UV exposure and limited recovery time. Over months and years, those combined lifestyle factors can influence how the skin behaves, particularly if barrier health is repeatedly compromised.

A study published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found that poor sleepers demonstrated slower skin barrier recovery and increased signs of intrinsic skin ageing compared with good sleepers.³ Given how commonly travel disrupts sleep patterns, this reinforces the importance of supporting skin recovery after periods of increased stress. For practitioners, this is worth asking at consultation: how often does this patient fly, and how soon after landing are they usually seen? That single question often reshapes the treatment plan more than any product recommendation.

A Better Flight Plan

One of the biggest shifts I'd like to see is patients thinking about skin preparation in the same way they think about packing a suitcase. We wouldn't prepare for a skiing holiday without considering warm clothing or spend time in the sun without applying SPF, yet many people board long-haul flights without giving any thought to how the journey itself may affect their skin.

The 72 hours before travel should be about preparing the skin; the 72 hours afterwards should be about helping it recover. If we can shift that mindset from reacting to tired-looking skin after a flight to proactively supporting it before and after the journey, I believe we'll see healthier, more resilient skin in the long term.
