The Lab Co. Becomes the First Fragrance House Approved by Breast Cancer UK

The Lab Co., part of Lab Atelier Brands, is proud to announce that it has achieved a groundbreaking global first milestone as the first fragrance house to be approved by Breast Cancer UK. This prestigious partnership underscores The Lab Co.'s commitment to safety and transparency in the fragrance industry having been first to remove all known carcinogens, hormone and endocrine disruptors from its formulations and fragrances across its full clean fragrance and home portfolio — fine fragrance and body care will extend these standards to skin in 2026.

Breast Cancer UK has developed an A-to-Z Chemicals of Concern document that identifies known carcinogens, endocrine and hormone disruptors, and harmful substances found in everyday products. The Lab Co. has meticulously aligned its product formulations and fragrance oils with this list, a challenge many deemed impossible.

All The Lab Co.'s formulations undergo a rigorous, multi-stage review in accordance with Breast Cancer UK’s A-to-Z Chemicals of Concern List (latest edition published in 2024), effectively eliminating ingredients of concern or those often obscured by regulatory loopholes. This partnership with Breast Cancer UK ensures a continuous commitment to consumer safety and health. The charity comment on the partnership:

‘’Breast Cancer UK is thrilled to be partnering with The Lab Co. It is fantastic to work with a company that shares our values and is doing everything they can to help people make healthy choices when it comes to the products that they buy and use around their homes. The Lab Co has done something quite unique by ensuring that they don’t use anything in their products from our ‘A to Z Chemicals of Concern’ list. They are leading by example in a sector where we are trying to effect real change to help people limit their exposure to harmful chemicals and thereby reduce their risk of breast cancer.’’ – Breast Cancer UK

Founded in London in 2020 by luxury entrepreneurs Joshua Mano Gilbertson and Tess Richards, The Lab Co. is revolutionising the fragrance industry by prioritising emotional wellbeing and safety approaching fragrance as mood, identity and daily ritual — not just scent. Co-founder Tess Richards states:

“The brand was born from a disruptive question shaped by lived experience: why should fragrance — a powerful tool for emotional wellbeing — be inaccessible due to toxicity concerns, autoimmune conditions or long-term health risks? Rather than compromise on scent or safety, we have collaborated closely with master perfumers, and scientists to create mood- and vibe-transformative fragrances from natural and safe and sustainable synthetics oils, that deliver emotional depth without known carcinogens or hormone and endocrine disrupting chemicals. It is a very proud moment to say that we are the only fragrance house approved by Breast Cancer UK.”

Together, Gilbertson and Richards bring a rare blend of creative direction, fragrance craft and clean formulation rigor.

Since its launch, The Lab Co. has experienced rapid growth, partnering with retailers such as Selfridges, Ocado, Waitrose, and Spinneys, and expanding into the UAE market. The brand has also collaborated with notable names like Paul Smith, NET-A-PORTER, and Tommy Hilfiger, earning thousands of loyal customers five-star reviews. In 2026, The Lab Co. remains a privately owned, founder-led venture built for long-term category change. The brand sits at the intersection of prestige grocery, modern prestige fragrance and emerging beauty categories, with beauty, fine fragrance and body care coming online in 2026 to extend its radically clean standards closer to the skin. The Lab Co. continues to prioritise long-term safety, radical clean innovation, emotional wellbeing and modern scent craftsmanship as it scales globally.
