Green People Advanced Pro-Collagen Skin Defence

Green People has launched Advanced Pro-Collagen Skin Defence, a vegan ingestible supplement built around Vollagen, a plant-based amino acid complex, marking a move by the organic skincare brand into collagen support from within.

The formulation takes a different route to the marine and bovine collagen supplements that dominate the category. Rather than supplying animal collagen, which the body must break down before use, it provides the amino acids and nutrients the body draws on to form its own collagen. Vollagen is produced through precision fermentation using non-GMO corn and supplies all 18 amino acids associated with collagen composition, in a profile developed to mirror human Type I collagen, the main collagen found in skin.

Alongside the amino acid complex, the formula includes vitamin C, which carries an authorised claim for contributing to normal collagen formation, and zinc and copper, which carry authorised claims for protecting cells from oxidative stress and maintaining normal skin and connective tissue. Antioxidants including grape seed extract, a source of OPCs, and superoxide dismutase are included to help counter oxidative stress. The vegan formulation is free from dairy, gluten, wheat, soya, gelatine, artificial colours and preservatives. Recommended use is two capsules daily with food.

An independent 60-day consumer study of Vollagen in which participants took 1000mg daily and two thirds, 66 per cent, reported visible improvements in their skin, including firmer and more hydrated skin, a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and a more even complexion.

The brand is targeting the supplement at adults generally, and says it is particularly suited to mature and menopausal skin, sensitive skin, and those looking to protect skin against everyday environmental stressors. For salons and clinics, it sits in the growing ingestible beauty category as a vegan alternative for clients who decline marine or bovine collagen on dietary, ethical or religious grounds, a gap conventional collagen supplements cannot fill.

Green People was founded in 1997 by Charlotte Vøhtz and is based in West Sussex, having built its reputation on certified organic formulations for sensitive skin. Vøhtz helped establish the first Soil Association standards for organic health and beauty products. She says her interest in collagen and connective tissue health began after her daughter Alexandra was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and has dedicated the product to her memory. Vøhtz notes that the supplement is designed to work alongside a balanced diet, daily sun protection and good skincare, and is not intended to treat any medical condition.
