The Holy Grails of Menopause

Menopause, is a milestone in every woman's life - and despite this, it is only recently that it has become a topic of discussion and education. The more we learn of it, the more we know about it’s unwelcome dermatological companions. While it marks the cessation of menstrual cycles, its ripple effects transcend the reproductive system, profoundly impacting the skin and body. With a projected 1.1 billion women worldwide reaching menopause by 2025, understanding its impact on the skin, and consequently, the ways to mitigate these effects, is paramount. In a study by Environ it was revealed that approximately 15.5 million women in the U.K are either peri or post-menopausal currently, though 2⁄3 of women say there is a general lack of understanding and support during the menopause and 69% of women that Holland & Barrett surveyed said they would prefer to manage symptoms without HRT. We sat down with experts to understand further the effects of menopause on the skin and body, and how to combat them.

What is the big deal with Oestrogen?

We’ve all heard about the decline of Oestrogen, which then wrecks havoc on the skin - but what does that really mean? “One of the biggest challenges the skin faces is the perimenopause and menopause. Oestrogen (a group of three hormones oestriol, oestradiol and oestrone) plays a huge role in the skin and the decline of this important hormone, leaves the skin structurally weaker and negatively influences the skin on how it responds to environmental aggressions and how it protects itself.” shares skin expert Fiona Brackenbury “Oestrogen plays an important role in the skin, when it binds with specific receptor cells it is responsible for the production of collagen, elastin, fibrillin fibres, hyaluronic acid, and helps with wound healing. When there is a decline in oestrogen, the receptor cell activation diminishes and the collagen I and III are in shortfall and affect the density, plumpness, firmness, and flexibility of the skin. As well as the structural changes, the hydration and moisture levels are also affected which directly impacts the skin barrier and skin sensitivity and dryness is increased.”

The drop in Collagen

Other than this, you will have heard that collagen production starts to dwindle in our mid-to-late 20s and early 30s and we start losing 1% of our collagen per year after that, but the real depletion comes with menopause. ''During the first five years of menopause, skin loses roughly 30% of its collagen, followed by a more gradual decline in the years that follow - not good news for women of a certain age. Not only does skin lose its plumpness but visible wrinkles increase and it becomes more vulnerable to bruising and developing unwelcome skin conditions,” says Pauline Prescott, Founder & CEO of Formulae Prescott. Breaking down the most common skin issues during this period, Pauline says women need to pay particular attention to:

Itching and dry skin

A common complaint among women around the time of the menopause is itching and dry skin. Oestrogen is required for the skin’s natural hydration mechanisms, as it helps the skin produce ceramides, natural hyaluronic acid and sebum. Without these substances, water evaporates more easily causing the skin to become dry and scaly.

Redness and flushing

Hot flushes are a well-recognised symptom of menopause. Flushing can also occur from rosacea, a condition which appears to be more common in women, especially during menopause.

Spots, acne, eczema & psoriasis

Spots are distressing at any age and unfortunately can flare during menopause, particularly if you were prone to them as a teenager. Other skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can also be problematic. Ingredients to look out for to address these issues are Sweet Almond oil, which has been used for centuries to treat dry skin conditions. The oil’s fatty acid content may help dissolve excess oil on the skin, while the retinoids in the oil may reduce the appearance of acne and improve cell turnover. Sunflower oil is a good way to obtain the benefits of Vitamin E for the skin. It is an antioxidant that can help protect the skin from free radicals. It won’t clog pores and it’s not irritating. The linoleic acid in sunflower oil makes it effective at protecting skin against bacteria and germs. Then there’s Mandarin essential oil, which does not only smell fantastic but helps tone skin and is antibacterial in nature, so great to help with breakouts and has healing properties.

Sun damage

Mature skin faces various challenges, with one of the primary culprits being exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays. This radiation damages collagen and elastin fibres, diminishing the skin's strength and resilience. To preserve a robust skin barrier, it's crucial to shield your skin from the sun's harmful rays, maintain adequate hydration, and opt for mild skincare products that won't deplete your skin's natural oils. Consider incorporating a serum or treatment enriched with active ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C to address discolouration and enhance collagen production, promoting healthier, stronger skin.

Bruising, fragile skin and slow wound healing

As we age our skin becomes more fragile and a lack of Oestrogen exacerbates this process. Wounds also take longer to heal. Introducing natural plant extracts and oils such as pomegranate oil, rosehip seed oil, argan oil, sea buckthorn oil starflower oil and jojoba oil to name just a few will deliver multiple benefits to your skin, strengthening, protecting and soothing it. Additionally, incorporating ingredients like ceramides and fatty acids can help reinforce the skin barrier, preventing moisture loss and maintaining skin health during this transformative life stage.”

How does menopause affect the body?

Loss of oestrogen means women are at more risk of osteoporosis & joint pain. Bone density is one factor that declines dramatically post-menopause, and this can progress into osteoporosis. Women lose up to 10% of their bone mass in the five years after menopause, as a result of falling oestrogen levels. This means that bones are not as strong, and are more prone to fracturing or breaking. Vitamin D, as well as calcium, are vital vitamins that can help to support bone density. What’s more, in addition to its skin and wellbeing benefits, a healthy gut biome may also benefit bone health in menopausal women, share experts at the IIAA.

The decline in Oestrogen and Progesterone also means that up to 65% of menopausal women complain of sleep disturbances during menopause. Oestrogen and progesterone are both involved in regulating sleep patterns: when levels drop, sleep is disrupted. Hot flushes, emotional turbulence and other discomfort can also impact sleep.

IIAA research shows that almost half of menopausal women report feelings of depression, and almost a third say they suffer from anxiety. Low mood and a lack of self-confidence are also commonly associated with menopause. This is because oestrogen helps to regulate several mood-boosting hormones, including serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Almost half of menopausal women note feeling depressed.

It is commonly known that menopausal women often struggle with their memory and “brain fog”. The reproductive hormones oestrogen, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone all help to support cognition: aiding the “sharpness” of thinking. When levels drop, menopausal women often complain of memory problems or “brain fog”. Some 60% of women report memory loss or confusion around the time of the menopause.

Going beyond skin deep

Diet plays a crucial role in managing menopausal symptoms. A balanced diet rich in phytoestrogens, which are naturally occurring compounds in plants that can mimic the effect of estrogen in the body, may help in balancing hormone levels. Foods such as soy products, flaxseeds, and whole grains are good sources of phytoestrogens. Additionally, ensuring a regular intake of calcium and Vitamin D can help in maintaining bone health, which is often compromised during menopause due to declining estrogen levels. Incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can not only help in managing weight but also in combating common menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings.

Royal facialist, Deborah Mitchell also shares some practical tips for managing menopausal symptoms, such as maintaining optimal B12 levels, moderating alcohol consumption, and being mindful of your wheat and dairy intake, as these can impact gut health, which in turn influences your skin’s well-being. Above all, she underscores the importance of self- care and relaxation, advocating for activities that nurture your well- being, from leisurely evening walks in nature to indulgent facials that offer respite from the demands of daily life.

Lifestyle modifications are equally important. Regular exercise can help in managing weight, improving mood, and promoting better sleep. It also plays a crucial role in maintaining bone and heart health. Activities like walking, swimming, yoga, and strength training can be beneficial. Stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness can be powerful tools in managing menopausal symptoms. They help in reducing stress and anxiety, which often exacerbate menopausal symptoms. Furthermore, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, avoiding stimulants like caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, and creating a relaxing bedtime routine can aid in combating insomnia, a common issue during menopause.
