Treating Rosacea With Laser

With April being Rosacea Awareness Month, Consultant Dermatologist at Self London, Dr Anjali Mahto, explains treatment options that are available in clinic for the condition and the effectiveness of laser treatment.

The Clear Suite - What is it and How Does it Work?

The Clear Suite laser is a relatively new addition to the range of treatments available for rosacea and contains both the Clear Silk (for laser facials, redness, flushing, pigmentation and acne-type bumps) and Clear V (specifically for targeting vascular lesions such as enlarged blood vessels or thread veins). This innovative device delivers targeted bursts of light energy to heat and shrink blood vessels, reducing redness and improving overall skin tone. As well as reducing general redness it can also tackle venous lakes and individual veins. Unlike some traditional laser treatments, the laser is gentle on the skin and typically requires minimal downtime

One of the key advantages of Clear Silk is its ability to deliver effective results with minimal discomfort and downtime. Patients can often resume their normal activities immediately after treatment, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles. Additionally, the Clear Silk laser can be used in combination with other therapies to enhance its effectiveness and prolong the duration of results.

In my experience, combining the Clear Suite laser with BBL and topical therapies such as azelaic acid and ivermectin  can help optimise treatment outcomes for patients with rosacea. By addressing both the vascular and inflammatory components of the condition, combination therapies can deliver superior results compared to laser treatment alone. This is why it’s important to consult with a dermatologist for rosacea management so we can create a bespoke treatment plan that’s catered to your individual needs.

BBL/Halo Laser  - What is it and How Does it Work?

Another option for rosacea treatment is the BBL/Halo laser. This advanced technology combines broadband light (BBL) with a hybrid fractional laser energy to target multiple aspects of rosacea, including redness, inflammation and uneven skin texture. The BBL component of the laser delivers intense pulses of light to heat and destroy blood vessels, while the fractional laser penetrates the skin to stimulate collagen production and improve overall skin tone and texture.

The BBL/Halo laser offers several benefits for patients with rosacea, including the ability to target multiple aspects of the condition simultaneously. By addressing both the vascular and textural components of rosacea, this laser can deliver comprehensive results with minimal discomfort and downtime. Many patients experience a significant improvement in their skin tone and texture after undergoing BBL/Halo laser treatment.

Combining the BBL/Halo laser with oral medications such as antibiotics or low dose isotretinoin can help address both the vascular and inflammatory components of rosacea, leading to enhanced treatment outcomes. The Halo laser is of particular interest in those patients also looking to combine anti-aging into their treatment plan (think enlarged pore size, mild scarring, pigmentation issues, or simply wanting to boost collagen).

How to choose the right laser for rosacea

When considering laser treatment for rosacea, it's essential to consult with a qualified dermatologist who can assess your individual needs and recommend the most suitable option. During your consultation, your dermatologist will evaluate the severity of your rosacea, your skin type and any other underlying conditions that may affect treatment outcomes.

Based on your individual needs and goals, we will then develop a personalised treatment plan that may include laser therapy, topical medications, oral medications, and lifestyle modifications. This tailored approach is key to achieving optimal results and improving your overall quality of life.

Other things to consider for rosacea management

While laser treatments can be highly effective in managing rosacea, it's important to approach them with realistic expectations. While they can significantly reduce redness and improve overall skin tone and texture, they may not completely eliminate all symptoms of rosacea. However, with proper maintenance and follow-up care, many patients experience long-lasting results and a significant improvement in their quality of life.

In addition to laser treatments, there are several lifestyle modifications that can help manage rosacea symptoms and prevent flare-ups. These may include avoiding triggers such as spicy foods, hot beverages and alcohol, as well as implementing gentle skincare routines using non-irritating products.

In conclusion, laser treatments such as the Clear Suite and BBL/Halo laser offer promising options for patients struggling with rosacea. By working closely with a consultant dermatologist and following a comprehensive treatment plan, many individuals can achieve clearer, more radiant skin and regain their confidence.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterised by persistent redness, visible blood vessels and sometimes bumps and pimples. It can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, causing discomfort and self-consciousness. Managing rosacea requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both the underlying causes and visible symptoms.

In recent years, laser therapy has emerged as a valuable tool in the management of rosacea. By delivering precise wavelengths of light, energy-based devices such as light and laser can target blood vessels and reduce redness, helping to improve the appearance of the skin. As a consultant dermatologist, I often recommend and perform laser treatments to patients struggling with rosacea. The two options that have shown promise are the Clear Suite ( Clear Silk and Clear V – 1064nm wavelength Nd: YAG) and the BBL/Halo laser, which we use at my clinic.
