Top Tips to Retain Waxing Clients in the Winter

Andy Rouillard, Salon System Just Wax Expert specialist and Owner of Axiom Wax Academy shares his Winter Waxing Tips to keep clients coming back in the colder seasons.

Moving from the rush of the pre-Christmas party season to the colder winter months of January and February can be a concern for many salons. Waxers may worry that customer numbers and frequency will ‘drop off’ if people aren’t going on holiday or out and about as much. There’s often a feeling that clients might switch to the razor or indeed ditch hair removal altogether if they are covering up more. But it doesn’t have to be a quiet season.

Tip No 1

Though the weather outside is frightful, the wax pots are so delightful! Winter is in fact the perfect time to get customers into a regular waxing routine and their skin used to waxing. Start now and by the time we hit bikini season again, their hair growth should be in the perfect cycle for long-lasting, smooth results. If clients have been shaving, encourage them to get those annoying ‘in-between’ appointments out of the way while they can still cover up, versus waiting until the sun returns to start waxing from scratch again.

Tip No 2

For better waxing results, share tips via e-shots or social media posts to help your customers keep their skin in top condition. We all love a long soak in the tub at this time of year, but hot water and lots of bubbles can strip the skin of its natural oils, so try a shea butter bath bomb or scented oil, as a relaxing treat instead. Daily, dry skin will really benefit from turning the heat down a notch in the shower and slathering on a moisturising body balm. Explain to your clients to keep up with regular exfoliation to help avoid trapped hairs and you could even retail a salicylic acid product to beat those really stubborn ingrown, too.

Tip No 3

Deals, packages, and small gifts with purchase (like a bath bomb, body scrub or lip balm) are all great ways to incentivise customers and link-sell your services. Winter-themed wax packages could include a hydrating facial plus a brow and upper lip wax; a moisturising paraffin treatment for the hands or feet, complete with hair removal from the toes and fingers to finish the look and for the chaps, a back scrub plus nose and ear wax for the perfect New Year M.O.T.

Tip No 4

The winter season brings its own unique set of challenges for waxers, such as extra dry skin, cold complexions, and ingrown hairs. If your client’s skin is a little dehydrated or rough, this can lead to your wax sticking more and becoming difficult to remove. To combat this, rub a few drops of protective oil like Salon System Just Wax Expert Protect & Smooth Oil into dry and scaly patches before laying down your wax – this will create a protective lipid barrier that makes your wax easier to remove and the whole experience more comfortable for customers.
