Data compiled by the Local Data Company and published by the Telegraph has shown that 4,578 hair and beauty salons across Britain have closed their doors permanently since the start of the global pandemic.

The close contact industry and the hospitality industry have been some of the industries most hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Many have received a lack of support from the government to enable to keep their businesses afloat and have chosen to close for good since March 2020. In this, 780 hair and beauty salons have closed in London alone, 466 in Scotland and 140 in Wales.

While furlough has been able to help staff costs to a business, there has not been enough support in cutting rent or business rates. The beauty industry is expecting that the government will be able to offer VAT cuts similar to those offered to the hospitality industry.

The news comes on top of the news that tier 4 has been extended in which hair and beauty salons must close.
