Introducing Epigen Depuff Pollution Shield eye serum, a supercharged serum that helps to reduce the appearance of eyebags and dark circles, while defending the skin around eyes from pollutants and external aggressors.

How can air quality affect your skin?

Human skin is our natural barrier against external aggressors, including air pollution. Prolonged exposure to pollutants has harmful effects: damaging skin's stable function protective barrier, activating a cascade of DNA damaging events, reducing oxygen levels in skin cells, preventing natural collagen production, which results in increasing the appearance of signs of ageing and leading to inflammatory and other skin conditions.

What are the air pollutants that can harm the skin?

-   Oxides or NOx (Nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide) - Gases mainly caused by motor vehicles and power stations. They can react to form smog and acid rain.

- PAHs (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) - Highly toxic chemicals that originate by burning fossil fuel like gasoline, coal, or gas, wood, and even tobacco.

- voes (Volatile Organic Compounds) - Gases released from burning fuel such as gasoline, wood, coal, etc. When combined with NOx, they produce smog.

- 03 (Ozone) - Formed when pollutants react chemically in the presence of sunlight. Ozone oxidizes the lipids (natural sebum) found in the outer layer of the skin.

How can we protect our skin from sun and pollution?

The industry has obviously been highly focused on protecting from UV damage with sunscreens, which is essential, but these are not able to defend the skin from pollution. We have also been able to reduce the damage to the skin with controlled use of antioxidants, which is still relevant to healthy skin.

However, we must now focus also on pollution, chemicals and environmental stressors, which research shows can cause epigenetic changes in skin genes, leading to gene inactivation at different degrees.

With recent advances in Epigenetic science, we can now help reverse the damaging effects of pro-oxidative pollutants on skin by:

-     Activating skin's own cleaning process at a cellular level

-     Accelerating epidermis cellular regeneration

-     Slowing the skin cells ageing process

What ingredients should you be looking for in your products to ensure you are protecting your skin from pollution?

QMS products formulated to counteract pollution damage contain an Epigenetic Peptide, a biologically active peptide that mimics the  function of royalactin, which helps activate the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor to promote tissue regeneration.

In the new EpiGen Depuff Pollution Shield Eye Serum, the biomimetic peptide is responsible for activating the skin's own cell cleaning process and accelerating cell renewal to offset the damaging effects of pollutants.
